Luncheon Speaker: Stephanie Bryan (Tribal Chair and CEO of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians)

In 2014, Stephanie Bryan became the first woman elected to serve as Tribal Chair and CEO of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Now, twelve years after assuming this dual leadership role, her effectiveness is evident in both the Tribe’s government and its business holding.

 Under Stephanie’s leadership, there has been a significant expansion of tribal government services that include a new health center, senior center, and community center.

As CEO, she encouraged a strategic diversification of the Tribe’s business portfolio beyond gaming. Today, the Poarch Creek Indians own more than 20 different businesses spread across several states and the Caribbean.

A lifelong member of the Poarch community, Stephanie worked in the insurance industry before deciding to pursue her passion for public service.  First elected to Poarch’s Tribal Council in 2009, she served as the Council’s Vice Chair until being elected to her current role. She also served as Chair of Poarch’s Tribal Gaming Commission.

Throughout her career, Stephanie has been a highly effective advocate for improving healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for Poarch’s tribal citizens, as well as for the extended Atmore community. She was instrumental in helping to secure broadband coverage and emergency medical services for the Tribe and its neighbors who live in and around the reservation in Atmore -- a very rural part of the state.  

In Alabama, Stephanie is on the board of the Business Council of Alabama (BCA), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBS), the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), and Leadership Alabama.

Nationally, Stephanie is a member of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Tribal Advisory Committee, and she is on the board of USET (United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc.)

Stephanie is a mother and grandmother and a lifelong member of the Poarch Community. She credits the strong women in her family – her mother, grandmothers and aunts – with instilling in her a deep dedication to her community, respect for tradition, and a laser focus on progress and growth. These core values have made her a pivotally important leader for her Tribe, in Alabama, and nationally.
